Local District Supt. Cheryl Hildreth sent an automated call on Friday, 12/8, to confirm that school will reopen on Monday.  This decision was based on improved air quality and the lifting of mandatory evacuations that impacted our school communities.

The safety of our students and employees is always our top priority. District crews worked this weekend to install new air filters at the closed schools and ensure that facilities are ready for teaching and learning to resume. However, we may continue to limit outdoor activities until air quality returns to normal levels. Please visit lausd.net for updated information and on-going resources for our students and families.

We realize that this has been a trying time for our families and employees. We are very grateful for your cooperation and understanding and look forward to seeing you back at school again on Monday.

Seeking Contributions for the Westwood Charter Multicultural Week Museum December 11-15

Westwood Charter's Multicultural Week will be December 11th-15th. In addition to the classroom "feast" and parent presentations, the library is transformed into a "museum" featuring items contributed by Westwood Charter families over the year. These items include a wide range of objects from pieces of traditional clothing, to statues, to small books, etc. The items are arranged by country of origin and all classrooms have the opportunity to tour the museum during their library time.

We are seeking new contributions for the museum this year. Please consider donating an object to the museum that reflects your family's origins/visits/culture. These items will be kept permanently at Westwood Charter and displayed each year in the museum. Although children are discouraged from handling the items, please don't contribute anything that is extremely fragile or expensive. Please include a tag or sign with the object indicating your family's name and the origin of the item, which will be included in the display.

If you have an item to donate, please bring it to the office (preferable in a plastic bag with the item/sign) and a place it in the black plastic bin we have put there for the multicultural museum. We are accepting donations all next week (Dec. 4-8) If you want your item to be included, be sure to drop it off by next Friday, December 8th so it can be included in the museum.

Please feel free to email us with any questions.

Thanks,

Angelike Dexter (angeliked@gmail.com) and Beth Glenn-Mallouk (bethaglenn@hotmail.com)

Principal's Coffee

Wednesday, December 6 8:15 am in Library

Guest Speaker: Dr. Barbara Moreno

How to Talk with Your Children When the World Seems Scary

A Westside favorite, Dr. Barbara Moreno, a child and family therapist, will lead the conversation. Her many years of experience as a social worker, parent, teacher and psychotherapist forms a strong base for her successful and relevant parent support groups.

Participants will explore the impact of worry and anxiety on the family when events around us feel scary.

They will take home practical tools and insights on ways to reassure their children and to

help them better deal with their distress.

Westwood parents continue to give her work with them outstanding reviews:

"This was a sensitive and relevant workshop.Thanks."

"I love the logical, compassionate and intelligent approach to . . parenting."

Council is the practice of speaking and listening from the heart. Through compassionate, heartfelt expression and empathetic listening, Council offers an effective means of communicating. It provides a common experience and shared vision for sound decision-making and conflict resolution. It is also a valuable learning tool that enables children to express themselves thoughtfully and with confidence.
Your child participates in Council on a regular basis at our school. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to experience with your child, what has become common practice at Westwood Charter. COME BE A PART OF THE CIRCLE!

School begins on Tuesday, August 15th at 8:05am and we will have staff members on the playground with classroom assignment lists.  When you arrive, please proceed to the yard where your child's teacher will be waiting to meet their new class.   Kindergarten teachers and teachers in the bungalows will meet their students outside their doors while teachers in the main buildings will meet their classes on the field.  Each teacher will have a large sign with their room number for easy identification.

Last chance to get to 100%!

Congrats to Ms. Rumi's, Ms. Thyer's, Ms. Kennedy's and Ms. D'Arceaux's classes for reaching 100% participation! We've had a whopping 10 classes reach 100% this year, and several more are just one away!

If you haven't yet donated, give today! Donations received by tomorrow, June 5th will still count towards earning a pizza party.

Every child benefits from the programs and benefits the fund drive makes possible: ART, MUSIC, P.E., PLANET BRAVO, GARDENING, TEACHER'S ASSISTANTS and SMALLER CLASS SIZES. These initiatives cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and rely entirely on donations. That's why we ask every family to donate $975/student or any meaningful amount. We need every penny and every family to contribute.

So make your 100% tax-deductible donation today and earn that pizza party!

Thank you for your support,

WWC Lending Library has arrived! Skye Richmond, a 5th grader, has worked with Mrs. Thyer to create a lending library, which is located in the hallway outside of our school library. The guidelines are:

  • donate a book, take a book (please only donate 1-2 books at a time)
  • do NOT put library books into the Lending Library
  • donated books must be in GOOD condition
  • put donated books into the appropriate grade level container.

We hope that Westwood families take advantage of this opportunity and enjoy replenishing their libraries at home. COME CHECK IT OUT! :) Happy Reading!

YOUR JOGATHON DOLLARS AT WORK!

Have you noticed something new under the trees in the lunch area?  Last week, thanks to your Jogathon donations, the school received 26 new benches to provide additional shaded seating for our kids at lunch and snack time.  We also hope that by enclosing the trees with benches, less dirt will be tracked around, resulting in a cleaner lunch area for everyone.  And . . . we hope you all enjoy the additional seating at drop off and pick up as well!  Thank you for supporting the Jogathon!

Volunteer Meeting: Wednesday, May 24 at 8:15 am in the cafeteria

We are looking for parents who are interested in volunteering on a committee next school year.

Volunteers are an essential part of Westwood's comprehensive educational and enrichment programs. Together, the staff and parents of Westwood Charter School work hard to inspire our children with a love of learning and to provide them with the environment and tools to learn successfully. Without volunteers to lead activities and fundraise, many essential programs would not exist. Volunteering is a wonderful way to participate in your child's education and show him or her that you think school is important. For more information about each position please click here:  https://westwoodcharteres-lausd-ca.schoolloop.com/volunteers

If you are interested please fill out the following google form and we will be in touch with you.  https://goo.gl/forms/jomxFjVCRpxUVokx1

Thank you for expressing interest in volunteering at our wonderful school. Our school would not be same without our active parents who take time time each to year to make our school amazing

While the job requires bringing enough food and coffee for our six dozen teachers and staff members, if you grab a friend or two or three, it could be as easy as bringing in a dozen or so baked goods - muffins, donuts, bagels, breads, or anything else you like - homemade or store bought, it's all appreciated!  So pick a Friday (or two if this is your kind of thing) and do it alone, sign up with friends, or get your new class to do it together but let's show the teachers and staff how sweet we think they are!

Emergency Drill will be conducted on Thursday from 10:40 - 11:30am.

Each month our school practices a different type of emergency drill.  This month will we practice a lock down drill.  During this type of drill we will not be able to allow students or visitors to enter or exit our campus until the drill is completed.

During a lockdown, students are moved (or remain) inside for their safety because there is some sort of threat to the well-being of the students. Lockdowns are implemented for a variety of reasons, including an intruder on campus, police action in the area, disruptive community incident, or even a dangerous animal on campus. In a lockdown, school buildings are used to help protect the students from outside harm.  School administrators and district officials work closely with law enforcement and other outside agencies to maximize student safety.

For additional information about this type of drill or other types of emergency preparedness, please visit the

LAUSD Webpage School Emergency Information for Parents

http://achieve.lausd.net/Page/4878  and http://achieve.lausd.net/Page/6692  for information on how to download the LAUSD Community Emergency Plan app is available in English and Spanish for parents/guardians, students, and members of the public seeking LAUSD emergency preparedness information. This app contains information about how LAUSD schools prepare for and respond to a variety of emergencies and crises, including how parents and guardians are notified, how families will be reunited by the school in an emergency, and offers resources families can access.

SWEET FRIDAYS

Breakfast treats & coffee for our fabulous staff!

Sign Up Now!

Sweet Fridays is a program where parent volunteers bring in coffee and breakfast treats for our fabulous teachers and staff and we need your help!

All you need to do is sign up for the Friday of your choice (or multiple Fridays if this is your kind of thing!) and bring in coffee, muffins, bagels, fruit - whatever you'd like - to feed the staff.  If feeding six dozen is outside your comfort zone, recruit a few friends or turn it into a project with your child's class and it could be as simple as picking up a couple of coffee cakes at Trader Joe's.  Whether you bake or buy, do it single-handedly or with a group, your efforts will be so appreciated!

Please click the signup genius link below to sign up:

http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f094daaae2ca31-sweet

Thank you!  If you have questions or would like suggestions on what to bring, email Heather Wigginton at wigginton.heather@gmail.com

Jonathan 2017, Saturday, February 4 at Emerson Middle School

The 4th Annual Westwood Charter Jogathon is less than two weeks away! The Jogathon will take place on Saturday, February 4th at Emerson Community Charter School from 8 AM to 11 AM. Jogathon T-shirts will be given out at the Jogathon so please arrive early!

Kindergarters must arrive by 8 AM in order to find their classes, get their t-shirt and do a warm up. The Jogathon schedule is as follows:

Kinders - 8:30 - 8:50 AM (Must arrive by 8 AM)

1st, 1/2, 2nd graders - 9:15 to 9:45 AM (Must arrive by 8:45 AM)

3rd , 4/5th graders - 10 to 10:45 AM (Must arrive by 9:30 AM)

We would like to thank our generous sponsors for helping provide t-shirts for the Jogathon including Tae Ryong Taekwondo, Prime Time Sports, the Westside Pavilion, MomsLA.com, Lauren Ravitz, Chad Lund, Marci Baron, Heyler Realty and Dana Cataldi. We would also like to thank Emerson Community Charter for allowing us to use their track for the race. Special thanks to Prime Time Sports for providing a DJ and Fiji Water for providing water for the Jogathon.

Please give your kids a good breakfast that day and be on time. We encourage you to make signs and cheer the kids on while they jog. There's no need to bring water bottles for Jogathon as Fiji Water has donated water for the race.

If you haven't already, please have your child get sponsors by asking family, friends, and neighbors for their support. Supporters can use the pledge form that went home in your child's homework folder (there are extra forms in the office) or make a donation on the Jogathon Fundraising website https://www.crowdrise.com/westwood-charter-jogathon-2017/fundraiser/westwoodcharter

Past Jogathons raised enough money to enhance our playground and PE program, beautify the campus and purchase umbrellas and shade for the lunch area.

This year, the Westwood Charter Jogathon donations will help fund benches and/or additional outdoor improvements to provide shaded seating and keep the children's lunch area clean. Any extra money raised will go to helping fund the P.E. program.

Please RSVP to Diana Greenstein directly at dlg0408@lausd.net

Love,

Your Westwood Charter Teachers
