IMPORTANT UPDATE ON TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN, AS OF FEBRUARY 2, 2012:
Senate Bill 1381, the “Kindergarten Readiness Act,” is slated to take effect in the school year 2012-2013, moving the kindergarten entry age to those students who are 5 years old by Nov. 1, 2012. The bill provides for a Transitional Kindergarten Program for those students who turn 5 between Nov. 1, 2012 and Dec. 2, 2012.
Recently Governor Brown’s budget proposed the elimination of Transitional Kindergarten. Whether Transitional Kindergarten will continue to be implemented in LAUSD depends on what happens at the state level. In any event, Westwood Charter will continue our highly successful Transitional Kindergarten, providing the opportunity to participate for those students who are born in the last three months that qualify for kindergarten admission. In other words, if the state sets the cutoff at Nov. 1, 2012, then students born in August, September, and October would be eligible for TK. If the cutoff reverts to Dec. 2, then we would enroll students born in September, October and November.
The only enrollment in question would be for students who turn 5 between Nov. 1 and Dec. 2. We realize this puts parents in a difficult position, as you need to plan for next year, and we will update information as soon as a decision has been made at the state level.
